Italian Summer? Here’s What to Pack

I am constantly reliving my days in Europe, whether it’s the homemade gnocchi I learned to make or fashion trends like Sambas and New Balances that have fully made their way into America. There is always something that evokes a feeling, something that brings me back to those cherished moments abroad.

Italy especially lives rent free in my mind. From the cobblestone streets of Rome to the turquoise water along the Amalfi Coast, every memory is tied to a mood and a look. And when it comes to fashion, Milan is always ten steps ahead. I find myself constantly forecasting what will hit next by watching what is on the high streets there.

Here’s what we saw gaining momentum leading into Summer 2025, and what made it into real wardrobes.

Whether you're gallivanting around Capri, heading to a club in Milan, touring the Colosseum in Rome, or hiking the trails of Cinque Terre, I’ve pulled together the perfect packing list that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing style. Because let’s be honest, dressing up is half the fun of going away.

Below, I’ve broken down exactly what to bring, from shoes to swimwear, with comfort and versatility in mind.

Shoes:
You will want one pair that is functional and one that is fashion-forward. Think classic leather sandals for day-to-night wear, and ballet flats or minimal square toe flip flops for exploring. If you are planning any hikes or city walks, a comfortable sneaker is a must.

Athletic Wear:
You’ll thank yourself for packing a simple athletic set for travel days, light workouts, or even as loungewear. A matching bra top and biker short set doubles as athleisure and can be worn under oversized shirts or jackets. Additionally, the workout dress is a perfect mix of cute and comfortable, it offers sweat protection while still achieving style.

Sundresses:
There’s nothing more essential. Linen, cotton poplin, or breezy silk slip styles are easy to pack, can be dressed up or down, and look effortlessly chic. A white dress is always a good idea. I remember last summer, Dolce & Gabbana’s Maiolica printed cotton poplin dresses were everywhere on Via Camerelle.

Swim:
Pack at least two bikinis and one one-piece. You never know when a boat day or a hotel spa will be calling. Lean into timeless silhouettes in bold prints or metallic finishes. I purchased a few lemon inspired bikinis in Italia.

Coverups:
Think beyond the typical. A sheer maxi dress, a knit button-up, or even a sarong can take you from the beach to lunch. Look for pieces that can work double duty.

Shorts:
Longer lengths are in. Opt for a tailored Bermuda short, a boxer-inspired cotton short, or even a structured linen pair. These can be styled up with a vest or tank.

Here are some looks from my last trip that highlight trends still going strong in Summer 2025, including the knitted bucket hat, bubble hems, head scarves, asymmetric styles, and more.
