Trends That Last: The Silk Scarf
Some trends come and go, but every once in a while, you find something that feels timeless. For me, that’s the classic silk scarf.
There’s something about the way a silk scarf instantly elevates any outfit — whether it’s tied around your neck, wrapped in your hair, or knotted onto the handle of a handbag. It’s a simple touch that feels endlessly chic, no matter the season or the setting.
I recently counted my collection and realized I have over 15 silk scarves, each carrying its own special memory. My love for them started in college, when I had the opportunity to design my very own at Kent State. I chose an Amalfi Coast theme, dreaming that one day I would see it in person.
A few years later, that dream became a reality when I studied abroad in Florence, Italy. Traveling throughout Europe deepened my love for silk and scarves, and it made me feel even more connected to my heritage. Since then, I’ve picked up scarves from Milan, Paris, Capri, London — each one a little reminder of where I’ve been and the style I discovered along the way.
Even back home, I’ve made it a tradition to find new ones during vacations around the U.S. There’s a boutique in Naples, Florida called Best of Everything that I never leave without grabbing a new scarf for my collection.
No matter how trends shift, a good silk scarf always holds its place. It’s a smart, stylish staple that adds an instant edge to any look — and that’s something I’ll always make room for.
What makes silk scarves so unique is the story each one carries. Every print, pattern, and color palette evokes a different feeling — from playful and bold to soft and romantic. I recently explored the Met Cloisters and was truly inspired by the art work that I even had to grab a silk scarf from the gift shop. I felt connected to the painted canvas by Claude Monet called The Four Trees in which they printed on a scarf. The beauty of a silk scarf is how it can completely shift the mood of your outfit. Whether you want to add a touch of whimsy, a pop of color, or an elegant layer, it fits seamlessly into any style, day or night.
There are endless ways to wear a silk scarf, which only adds to its versatility. Around the neck, you can fold it into a French knot for a classic, polished look or tie it loosely for a more casual, effortless feel. A triangle fold tied bandana-style gives off a playful vibe, while wrapping it into a slim ribbon offers a minimal, refined touch. I also love using scarves as chic headbands, tying them onto the strap of a tote for a pop of color, or even styling them as a belt around denim. Every twist and tie changes the look just enough to make it feel new.
